Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition push for safety & awareness during national bike month

With May being National Bike Month the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition is taking this opportunity to raise awareness.

There’s been an alarming increase in the number of deadly bicycle versus car accidents in Nevada. The numbers for 2017 now, more than double what they were in years prior.

According to the organization, nine cyclists died in 2017 from accidents involving vehicles. They say that’s the highest death toll for cyclists in the silver state in the last 16-years when the average was just 4.

Jacob Snow is a board member of the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition as says people need to follow the “more space keep it safe” 3-feet law and also, avoid driving distracted.

But he says it’s not solely the driver’s responsibility and cyclists need to make sure they’re following the rules of the road as well.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do to make our roads safer for cyclists. We are meeting closely with metro and all the police departments about enforcement.

But more importantly, every roadwork project that’s being planned we’re taking a look at it for bicycle infrastructure,” Snow said.

The Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition says they need more people to join and help advocate for cyclist safety and because of that they are waiving their membership fees for the month of may.
